HA VIEWPOINT(94HA.COM):Mexican President Sheinbaum said that the United States cannot effectively solve the immigration problem or alleviate the domestic drug consumption crisis in the United States by threatening and imposing tariffs alone.
Xinhua News Agency reported that Sheinbaum released an open letter to US President-elect Trump at a press conference in the capital Mexico City on Tuesday (November 26) in response to Trump’s recent remarks on immigration, drugs and tariffs.
She pointed out that the problem of illegal arms trade from the United States to Mexico is still very serious. 70% of the weapons illegally held by criminals seized by Mexican law enforcement agencies originated from the United States. She said that Mexico is neither the production site of these weapons nor the main consumer of synthetic drugs, but the consequences of violence and casualties caused by these problems are borne by Mexico.
Speaking of tariffs, Sheinbaum said that if the United States imposes tariffs on Mexico, Mexico will also be forced to take reciprocal measures, which may lead to increased operating risks for companies in both countries, while exacerbating inflation and unemployment. She called for understanding, peace and common prosperity through dialogue.
Trump announced on social media on the 25th that on his first day in office in January next year, the United States will impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada until the drug and illegal immigration problems are effectively resolved. He also announced that an additional 10% tariff will be imposed on Chinese imports.
