South Korea’s Nuclear Safety and Security Commission officially approved the decommissioning of the No. 1 unit of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant on June 26. This is the first nuclear reactor to be decommissioned in South Korea.
The Kori Nuclear Power Plant is located in Busan, South Korea. Unit 1 was permanently shut down in June 2017 after about 40 years of service.
The South Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said that the decommissioning plan for Unit 1 submitted by the operator of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant, Korea Hydro & Atomic Power, has been approved. Due to the need to build a spent fuel storage facility, it is expected that the complete dismantling of the nuclear power plant will take 12 years.
