On the 9th, US President Trump and California Governor Newsom accused each other of wanting to start a “civil war”, and thousands of demonstrators continued to gather in downtown Los Angeles on the same day.
Trump told reporters at the White House on the 9th that those who participated in the recent protests in Los Angeles were “professional agitators”, “rebels” and “bad guys” and should be imprisoned, while Newsom was extremely incompetent and did a terrible job, so he should be arrested.
A reporter asked Newsom that the president intended to provoke a civil war. Trump said, “On the contrary, I don’t want a civil war, but if people let people like him (Newsom) act, a civil war will happen.”
Trump also said: “I like him (Newsom). I got along well with him before. There was no problem between us, but he was very incompetent.”
Newsom posted on social media on the 9th that President Trump actually threatened to arrest him, and this behavior is the “bottom line that cannot be crossed” in the United States.
Newsom forwarded a video of Trump’s media interview that day and wrote: “The US president just publicly talked about arresting a sitting governor. I really hope that the United States will never see such a day. Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, this is the bottom line that our country cannot cross.”
Earlier, Trump’s border affairs director Homan said on the 8th that he would continue to implement a severe crackdown on illegal immigrants, and any obstructionists would be arrested, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Bass. Trump told the media on the 9th, “If I were Homan, I would go and catch him, I think it’s great.”
Regarding Trump’s order to dispatch the California National Guard to the Los Angeles area, Newsom accused Trump of acting like a “dictator.” He told the Los Angeles media: “He is not here to establish peace, he is here to fight. He wants to start a civil war on the streets of the United States, not just here.”
