US President-elect Trump announced the nomination of Mark Burnett, the producer of the reality TV show “The Apprentice” who helped him become famous, as the special envoy for British affairs, showing that he continues to look for his ruling team from non-traditional sources, especially the media and entertainment circles.
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday (December 21): “Mark Burnett has outstanding performance in television production and business, and he will uniquely combine diplomatic acumen and international recognition to this important role.”
This appointment is unusual because Trump had earlier nominated banker Warren Stephens as ambassador to the UK, and there is currently no position of special envoy to the UK.
Another point is that in the past, special envoys were only sent to countries in troubled regions. Trump has already appointed special envoys for the Middle East and Ukraine, and appointed former US Ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell as a senior envoy for “hot” issues such as Venezuela and North Korea.
Unlike ambassadors, Burnett’s appointment does not require Senate approval. Trump said Burnett’s duties will be to “strengthen diplomatic relations, focusing on areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment opportunities and cultural exchange.”
Burnett, 64, was born in London and is now a naturalized American. The former chairman of MGM Global Television Group is best known for Trump’s “The Apprentice” and its spinoff “Celebrity Apprentice.” “The Apprentice” requires job seekers to complete tasks in a competition to win Trump’s favor.
Trump also announced on Saturday that he would appoint restaurant billionaire Tilman Fertitta as ambassador to Italy.
Fertitta was a major donor to Trump during the 2024 election. His appointment must still be approved by the Senate.
