US President-elect Trump said that after he takes office, he will impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods and a 25% tariff on all products entering the United States from Mexico and Canada.
According to Bloomberg and Reuters, Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social he founded on Monday (November 25) that due to the influx of illegal drugs such as narcotics, the United States will impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods on top of all existing tariffs.
Trump said in another post: “On January 20th, as one of my first executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada entering the United States.”
“Drugs are pouring into our country, primarily through Mexico, in unprecedented quantities,” Trump said. He blamed immigrants and illegal drugs from Mexico and Canada on “ridiculous open border policies.”
Trump said the tariffs will remain in effect until Mexico and Canada crack down on drug smuggling, especially fentanyl, and illegal immigration across the border.
Trump also accused Beijing of not taking strong enough measures to stop illegal drugs from entering the United States from Mexico. He said: “Until drugs stop entering the United States, we will impose an additional 10% tariff on all products from China entering the United States.”
Trump had previously promised to end China’s most-favored-nation status and impose tariffs of more than 60% on Chinese imports, far higher than the tariffs imposed on China during his first term.
