On June 10, Ukrainian President Zelensky said in an interview with the Hungarian media “Vallas Online” that some Western countries supporting Ukraine demanded that Ukraine lower the minimum age for conscription to 18 in exchange for their more stringent sanctions against Russia.
According to the report, Zelensky admitted in the interview that mobilization is still a major problem. He said, “Mobilization is a problem in every war, and Ukraine is no exception. People are tired.”
Zelensky said that he estimated that Kiev could mobilize 27,000 people every month. The report also pointed out that Zelensky opposed the compulsory conscription of 18-year-olds, although Western supporters wanted him to do so.
Zelensky said that the West listed the reason why they did not decide to further sanction Russia, that is, Ukraine did not lower the minimum age for conscription to 18. He emphasized that “it is not the number of people that is important, but weapons and technology, money and pressure to sanction Russia for the funds used to finance the war.” In addition, he admitted that thousands of people are currently fighting on the front line without suitable weapons.
