The U.S. House of Representatives passed on June 3 a resolution to limit the president’s war powers, calling on Trump to end military operations against Iran and requiring congressional authorization before any future military actions against Iran. This marks the fourth time the House has voted on a resolution restricting presidential war powers since the U.S. began military action against Iran alongside Israel in early February. This is also the first time such a resolution has passed the House. (Vote results: 215 in favor, 208 opposed)

Four Republican representatives joined Democrats to vote in favor of the resolution. (CNN and other media outlets)

The resolution is a “joint resolution” requiring approval from both the House and Senate to take effect. Unlike regular bills, it does not require the president’s signature and cannot be vetoed, but according to the Senate website, it carries no legal force. (Some media outlets say this gives it more symbolic value)

Currently, Republicans hold a narrow majority in both houses of Congress. The “joint resolution” is moving forward in the Senate, with some Republican defections during the voting process, though a final vote has not yet been held. (The Hill) If passed, it would have legal force, though Trump is expected to veto it. (The Hill)
