German Finance Minister Sacked, FDP Withdraws From Coalition Government

German Free Democratic Party (FDP) parliamentary leader announced on Wednesday (November 6) that all FDP ministers will withdraw from the coalition government.

Earlier on Wednesday, German Chancellor Scholz dismissed FDP leader Christian Lindner from his position as Finance Minister. Scholz stated that Finance Minister Lindner had been dismissed due to a lack of “basis of trust for cooperation.”

The German coalition government is composed of the Social Democratic Party, the Green Party, and the FDP, with Lindner serving as the FDP chairman. He had proposed moving up the federal parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28 next year to early 2025, but Scholz rejected this proposal.

The three-party ruling coalition in Germany held a meeting on Wednesday to seek solutions to the ongoing budget and economic policy disputes that have lasted for several weeks but failed to reach a consensus.

In a press conference after the meeting, Scholz stated that Lindner had obstructed on contentious issues such as the budget, prioritizing party interests over national interests, and had “no further basis of trust for further cooperation.” He emphasized the need for an effective government capable of making necessary decisions for the country.

Scholz told reporters that Germany needs to clarify its future political direction as soon as possible. He proposed a vote of confidence in the government in the lower house of parliament on January 15 next year and expressed his desire to hold early elections before the end of March.

In response to this, Lindner stated in a media interview, “Scholz refuses to acknowledge that our country needs a new economic model. Scholz has indicated that he lacks the ability to bring new momentum to the country.”
