Indonesia: 75 GW of renewable energy power stations to be built in the next 15 years

Indonesia plans to build 75 gigawatts of renewable energy power stations over the next 15 years, and international investors are invited to participate in the investment and construction. Climate Ambassador Hashim of Indonesia made this announcement during a speech at the United Nations climate change conference held in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, via video on Monday, November 11th. He stated that the new Indonesian government will promote energy projects totaling 100 gigawatts over the next 15 years, with 75% or 75 gigawatts coming from renewable energy sources. The renewable energy projects will include solar, hydro, geothermal, and nuclear energy.

Hashim did not provide details on the remaining 25 gigawatts of the plan. He is the brother of the newly elected Indonesian President Prabowo.

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters. Jakarta has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, including phasing out coal-fired power plants and replacing them with renewable energy sources. Indonesia’s current total installed electricity capacity exceeds 90 gigawatts, with over half relying on coal-fired power plants and renewable energy accounting for less than 15%. Indonesia currently does not have nuclear power plants.

The CEO of the Indonesian state electricity company, Darmawan Prasodjo, announced in Baku that the company is designing a new green transmission line that will stretch 70,000 kilometers.

Analysts point out that Indonesia has abundant potential for renewable energy, but subsidies for coal have hindered investment in renewable energy. Hashim also revealed in his speech that Indonesia plans to launch a carbon offset project that could remove billions of tons of carbon emissions from the atmosphere. However, he did not provide further details.

He also mentioned that the Prabowo government will undertake a reforestation project to restore 12.7 million hectares of degraded forests in the coming years. Funding for this project will come from abroad, and the Bezos Earth Fund has shown interest in supporting this initiative.

The Bezos Earth Fund is a green fund established by Amazon founder Bezos with an investment of $10 billion USD.
