According to multiple reports, Mexican prosecutors confirmed that a local mayor in central Mexico was shot and killed inside the municipal palace on Saturday. Earlier this year, he had survived another assassination attempt.

Valentín Lavín Romero, seen here in a file photo, was killed in the city hall.

Officials say two armed men stormed the government building in Temoac, Morelos, on Saturday, opened fire on Mayor Valentín Lavín Romero, and then fled on a motorcycle. The region is known to be a hotbed for several powerful drug cartels.

Lavín is the third mayor to be killed in Mexico this year, following the murders of two mayors from Oaxaca state.

The Morelos State Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that forensic experts and police discovered his body inside the government office building. An active manhunt is underway for the suspects.
