According to reports from ESPN, on July 29, FIFA announced it has initiated multiple disciplinary investigations into the Argentine Football Association (AFA). Several Argentine players and coaching staff members are also set to face disciplinary inquiries.
The investigation into the AFA revolves around chants and so-called “inappropriate banners” displayed during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This includes a banner reading “The Malvinas Islands belong to Argentina,” which was unfurled by Argentine players after they defeated England in the semi-finals. The AFA also faces allegations of discrimination and violations of security regulations.
Additionally, FIFA has launched a separate investigation into incidents that occurred during the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against Argentine players Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Pablo Ayala. Spanish player Gavi is also under investigation for alleged misconduct.
Initiating the investigation process does not mean those involved have already been penalized. According to ESPN, under FIFA’s disciplinary code, the AFA, the players, and the coaching staff members will have the opportunity to defend themselves and explain their positions on the events. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee will make a decision after analyzing the evidence and statements.
