According to a report by the Stars and Stripes on the 14th local time, the US Navy discovered an unidentified drone at its largest base in Italy and implemented base-wide security measures.
The report states that this small drone was found at a support site within the US Navy base on the 13th, prompting security forces to take precautionary measures. Around the time of the discovery, the base issued a brief shelter-in-place order at one of its installations located approximately 13 miles (about 21 kilometers) from the incident site. It remains unclear whether this order was directly related to the drone sighting, or if a similar order was issued at the support point itself.
The base subsequently notified community members via email and text message that the entry and exit gates at the support site had resumed normal operations. About an hour and a half later, another text message announced that the support point had been fully restored to functioning status.
According to the report, the US Navy base stated that Italian law enforcement determined the drone contained no explosives and posed no explosion hazard, and the security alert has since been lifted.
