At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump paid a state visit to China from May 13 to 15.
Both sides had an in-depth exchange of views on strategic and long-term issues in China-US relations, as well as major international topics of common concern. They focused on collaborative efforts in areas such as economic and trade cooperation, global governance, artificial intelligence, anti-money laundering, and combating telecommunication fraud, and committed to “extending the list of cooperation and reducing the list of problems.”.
This meeting continued the pattern established in recent years by the Chinese and American presidents, who have calibrated the course of bilateral relations through frequent interactions. Since their meeting in Busan in October 2025, the two presidents have held multiple phone conversations and facilitated framework agreements between their economic and trade teams in Kuala Lumpur and other locations, laying the groundwork for this Beijing meeting.
The talks primarily revolved around core issues such as the strategic direction of Sino-US relations, economic and trade cooperation, and the Taiwan issue.
Based Economic and trade cooperation and mutual benefit: Both sides affirm that the essence of China-US economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, and oppose confrontation and conflict. The teams of the two countries have established an economic and trade consultation mechanism, committed to resolving issues such as trade imbalances and tariffs, and promoting global economic recovery.
Expanding global cooperation areas: Both parties explored potential cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change, AI governance, anti-money laundering, combating telecommunication fraud, and public health, demonstrating the responsibility of major countries.
Humanities and high-level exchanges: Encourage exchanges between the two countries in the fields of culture, education, youth, and local affairs, consolidate the public opinion foundation, and promote the relationship to develop steadily and achieve long-term success.
Trump’s visit to China marks the first state visit by a US president in nine years and is seen as a crucial step in a “big year” for Sino-US relations. Both sides anticipate that summit diplomacy will provide strategic guidance for bilateral ties.
