US Transitional “Air Force One” Makes Controversial Debut

According to reports, the new generation of the US presidential aircraft, “Air Force One,” has recently made its debut. This Boeing 747-8, a gift from Qatar’s royal family, features a fresh paint job in white, red, gold, and deep blue. From the beginning of its modification, it has been surrounded by controversy—especially because the US Air Force skipped some safety inspection items to ensure timely delivery.

ABC News reported on the 20th that this “Air Force One” was officially unveiled at an event at Andrews Air Force Base. President Trump stepped out of this newly equipped jet and praised it as “the most luxurious plane in the world.” He added, “When it’s built, its technology will be unprecedented, and there may never be another plane like it.” The new presidential aircraft is scheduled to perform its first major public flight display during the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026.

The report notes that “Air Force One” is the call sign for the US presidential aircraft, historically referring to the two active Boeing 747-200 jets in the US Air Force fleet. These planes have been in service for over 30 years and are showing signs of wear. Back during Trump’s first term, the US Air Force signed an agreement with Boeing to develop a new-generation “Air Force One,” but progress has been severely delayed, with delivery now expected around 2028—possibly not even in time for the end of Trump’s second term.

The Trump administration received this luxurious Boeing 747-8 from Qatar’s royal family last May. After modifications, it will serve as a transitional “Air Force One” until Trump leaves office. Trump mentioned that the “Air Force One” he used for his recent trip to the G7 summit in Europe was on its last regular mission, and it may soon be donated to a museum for preservation.

It’s reported that this Boeing 747-8 from Qatar has only about 800 flight hours, which Trump described as “practically new.” The interior is incredibly luxurious, valued at around $400 million, and ABC described it as “perhaps the most expensive gift ever received by the US government.” This has sparked legal and ethical questions domestically. Critics argue it crosses the line in US laws regarding officials accepting foreign gifts, creating conflicts of interest and national security risks, and suggesting Qatar is trying to influence the US president. Trump, however, dismissed the criticism, saying it would be “stupid” to refuse the gift.

Compared to previous “Air Force One” planes, this one is faster, has more interior space, and a longer range—capable of flying nonstop from Washington to the Middle East or Southeast Asia without refueling, greatly enhancing travel flexibility and efficiency. Trump also noted that the new plane is equipped with SpaceX’s Starlink system.

However, for a presidential aircraft, “Air Force One’s” core mission also includes serving as an airborne command center and safe haven in emergencies, ensuring the president can continuously and securely exercise national command authority. This requires “fortress-like” defenses. According to the US Air Force’s official website, “Air Force One,” as a fully functional mobile command center, needs to keep the president in contact with global US military bases and issue orders. It carries three independent communication networks to ensure the most sensitive instructions and information are not intercepted or hacked.

This transitional “Air Force One” has notable security shortcomings. The US Air Force stated that this plane will be equipped with advanced technology to meet presidential mission requirements, but will only undergo minimal interior modifications. This suggests it’s not being completely overhauled to standard “Air Force One” specs, but rather prioritized for short-term use. US experts criticize that the transitional “Air Force One” may lack key military systems like electromagnetic pulse protection and aerial refueling that current planes have, making it less secure than the existing “Air Force One.”
