According to sources cited by The New York Times and CBS News on the 4th, District of Columbia Federal Prosecutor Jenina Piro showed up at the White House on the 3rd dragging a “box full of evidence” to prove to President Trump that the damaged coating on the bottom of the reflecting pool was not intentional vandalism but rather the result of poor construction quality. US media described the encounter as a “heated showdown” inside the Oval Office.

The dispute stemming from the reflecting pool case has become one of the hot topics dominating US media headlines in recent days. After Trump pushed for the pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial to be renovated with a “blue base” in early June, problems quickly emerged—algae outbreaks, peeling coating, and more. Trump subsequently posted repeatedly, accusing someone of deliberately sabotaging the pool, though he offered no evidence to back up the claim.
In early July, 67-year-old American kayaker and former Olympic athlete David Hearn was sued by the federal government in the D.C. Superior Court for allegedly “vandalizing the reflecting pool.” On July 31st, Piro asked the judge to dismiss the case against Hearn, arguing that new evidence does not support the claim that Hearn “deliberately vandalized public property” and that the pool’s various issues stemmed from contractor negligence and rushed timelines. This statement marked a sharp reversal from her earlier position—at a July 2nd press conference, she had said that National Park Service employees witnessed Hearn “aggressively tearing and peeling” the sealant coating from the pool’s bottom. Piro’s sudden flip-flop on the issue has left Trump deeply frustrated.

According to The New York Times, rumors that Piro would be fired were quietly circulating in the West Wing of the White House, and Piro herself showed up at the White House on August 3rd. Details of the meeting between Piro and Trump have emerged: she arrived carrying a white box filled with evidence and a black box of documents—all the materials she had collected from the Department of the Interior proving that Hearn and others had not committed vandalism. Waiting for her in the Oval Office were not just Trump himself, but also Chief of Staff Susan Wiles, White House Counsel David Warrington, and Interior Secretary Burgum.
The report says that during the meeting, she repeatedly raised her voice, directly confronting Interior Secretary Burgum and accusing him of misleading the President. She believes Burgum fabricated a narrative to cover up his own failures. Previously, Piro had already criticized the Interior Department for not initially providing materials showing the pool’s problems stemmed from contractor negligence and rushed construction. She stated that if the administration had known these facts earlier, the lawsuit against Hearn would never have been filed.

Quoting sources familiar with the matter, The New York Times reported that after roughly an hour of intense back-and-forth, Piro “managed to keep her job for now.” As of now, the White House spokesperson, Piro, and Burgum have all declined to comment on the matter.
Piro has long been considered a “close ally” of Trump. She is a former Fox News host and was appointed federal prosecutor by Trump last year. According to media reports on the 3rd, Trump is “furious” with Piro over this highly publicized affair and is considering removing her from her post.
