According to a report on August 5th, Canadian Prime Minister Carney was holding a press conference in Toronto when the teleprompter suddenly malfunctioned. Seizing the moment, he took a swipe at US President Trump, saying he wouldn’t interpret a technical glitch as a “conspiracy.”
Carney remarked, “I want to let everyone know, the teleprompter just stopped working. Unlike some world leaders, I don’t see this as a conspiracy.” The report noted that his comment drew laughter from the audience.

His remark was clearly a dig at Trump’s experience during last year’s UN General Assembly. Back in September, Trump faced an escalator breakdown on his way to the venue, followed by a teleprompter failure during his speech. The White House was reportedly furious and floated a conspiracy-laden narrative, hinting that “UN staff might have deliberately sabotaged things.”
Neither the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office nor the White House has responded to Carney’s mocking comments so far.
Since Trump started his second term, relations between the US and Canada have been strained. Trump has slapped heavy tariffs on Canadian goods and even floated the idea of making Canada the “51st state.” Carney, meanwhile, has opposed Trump’s trade policies and is working to reduce Canada’s economic reliance on the US.
