Wan La Ramia, head of the Mizoram Home Affairs Department, told AFP that these refugees fled conflicts between hostile Chin armed groups and fled through dense forests to neighboring India.

He said: “Many people have relatives in India, so they can live with their relatives. Others are placed in community halls.”

It is reported that this remote mountainous area has accommodated more than 30,000 refugees from Myanmar. A deadly civil war has broken out in Myanmar since the military seized power in 2021.

According to the report, a senior police officer who did not want to be named said: “About 4,000 people came here in the past four days.”

Police said that fighting between two organizations opposed to Myanmar’s military regime for control of the Chin State region continues.

The police said: “The situation on the other side of the border is still tense, so we did not ask them to return.”
