OpenAI, the Enterprise AI Research Center, announced on February 28 that it had reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy its AI models on the Pentagon’s classified network. This came just one day after another U.S. company parted ways with the Pentagon over serious disagreements regarding the scope of AI applications.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on the social media platform X that the collaboration with the Pentagon adheres to the company’s principles that AI must not be used for “mass domestic surveillance” and that the use of force, including autonomous weapons systems, must be under human responsibility. He stated that the company has established “security safeguards.”

According to Bloomberg, Altman did not prohibit the use of AI tools in fully autonomous weapons systems.
