On April 7, local time, US President Trump said at the White House that selling energy to the European Union will be a key focus as his administration seeks to eliminate the trade deficit with the European Union.
Trump told reporters at the White House that the European Union is very bad for us, accusing European countries of not buying enough American goods.
“They have to buy energy from us because they need it, and they have to buy it from us. They can buy it, and we can cut $350 billion in a week.”
US President Trump recently signed an executive order announcing the imposition of so-called “reciprocal tariffs” on all trading partners, including a 20% tariff on products from the European Union. The European Union and European countries strongly opposed this, saying that they would respond with countermeasures if necessary.
CCTV reporters learned on the 7th local time that an EU document showed that the European Commission proposed to impose a 25% tariff on a series of US imports, which is scheduled to take effect from May 16. On the other hand, the European Commission removed American bourbon whiskey from its list of goods on which it intends to impose counter-tariffs.
Earlier on the 7th, European Commission Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Šefčović said that the first part of the EU’s tariffs on the United States is scheduled to start on April 15, and the second part of the tariffs is scheduled to start on May 15. Šefčović said that EU member states will vote on countermeasures against US steel and aluminum tariffs on April 9. If the vote is passed, the two parts of the EU’s tariffs on the United States will be levied on April 15 and May 15 respectively.
