On August 9, former President Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to announce that Will Scharf, the current White House Secretary, will step into the role of presidential assistant and White House Counsel starting September 1.
Trump wrote: “Will did an outstanding job as White House Secretary, and he also served as chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission. I know him very well — he has represented me in many cases, including before the Supreme Court. Will is tough, strong, and brilliant! He loves our country, respects the law, and is fully capable of serving as White House Counsel!”
Trump added that the current White House Counsel, David Warrington, will be heading to the private sector, and he thanked Warrington for his work during the presidential campaign and his tenure as counsel.

Public records show that Scharf, now 40, previously served as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit before working at a law firm. From 2020 to 2022, he worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Missouri. In 2023, he joined Trump’s legal team and defended him in multiple lawsuits.
After Trump returned to the White House, Scharf was appointed White House Secretary. In July 2025, Trump named him chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission.
The National Capital Planning Commission is an executive agency within the U.S. government that provides planning guidance for Washington, D.C. Notably, during his tenure as chairman, Scharf helped push through approval for Trump’s White House ballroom plan and also backed the proposal for a triumphal arch in the nation’s capital.
