On July 22, Eastern Time, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was forcibly taken into US custody, appeared again in court at the Southern District of New York. The judge announced that his trial on the charges against him will begin on June 1, 2027.

On the day of the court hearing, dozens of Maduro supporters from across the US gathered outside the courthouse to protest, demanding the immediate release of Maduro and his wife, and calling for an end to US military intervention abroad. One anti-war activist from Minnesota, Allison Gunderson, told us: “The US is prosecuting a sitting president of a sovereign nation and illegally kidnapping him. This is unjust and criminal.”

On January 3, the US launched a military strike against Venezuela, forcibly seized Maduro and his wife, and brought them to the US. US prosecutors charged them with crimes including drug trafficking. On January 5, Maduro and his wife made their first court appearance at the Southern District of New York and denied the charges. Maduro is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. The international community widely condemns the US for its serious violation of Venezuelan sovereignty and its threat to peace and stability in Latin America.
