US Defense Department: Actively Implementing Trump’s Directive to Reduce US-South Korea Military Drills

President Trump recently directed the Defense Department to significantly scale back joint military exercises with South Korea—a call that’s drawing both praise and criticism across the political and military spectrum. A Defense Department official told Military.com: “We’re actively working to carry out the President’s directive.”

Just hours before the annual US-South Korea military drills were set to begin, Trump took to Truth Social on the 16th, instructing Defense Secretary Hegseth to pursue a “substantial reduction” in the joint exercises. Part of the reasoning behind the move? South Korea’s decision to sit out the US-Israel joint military campaign against Iran that kicked off in late February. When asked by Korean reporters the next day about Trump’s remarks, a Defense Department official confirmed the Pentagon is actively implementing the President’s instructions but stopped short of detailing any concrete steps taken so far.

Media speculation suggests the US has already begun the process of trimming the scale of the joint drills, possibly coordinating with South Korean forces to adjust the size of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises. But Seoul’s Defense Ministry pushed back on the 17th, stating that the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills are proceeding as planned.

According to Sputnik, Trump’s decision to “significantly cut” the size of US-South Korea military exercises has drawn sharp rebukes from several lawmakers. Republican Senator Tom Tillis voiced confusion over the move, while Democratic Senator Jack Reed, the top member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, blasted it as “foolish and contradictory.” Senator Mark Warner of the Intelligence Committee was taken aback: “Wow! Even I didn’t see this one coming!” In a video posted to social media, he demanded, “Whose side is he on, exactly?” Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal also leveled harsh criticism at the decision, arguing that Trump, “eager to become America’s authoritarian leader, has chosen to throw South Korea under the bus,” and warning that the move is “extremely dangerous for the stability of the region.”
