Major Setback: US Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump’s Executive Order on Birthright Citizenship

“It was a heavy defeat for Trump.” According to reports, on Tuesday (June 30), the US Supreme Court delivered a pivotal ruling, upholding lower court decisions and dismissing Trump’s executive order aimed at restricting “birthright citizenship” with a 6-3 vote.

Chief Justice John Roberts, a conservative, authored the opinion, stating that Trump’s order contradicted the language of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. This decision marks the second time the Supreme Court has invalidated a major policy of the Trump administration, following a February ruling that declared the government’s large-scale tariffs unconstitutional.

On his first day back in the White House last January, Trump signed an executive order stipulating that newborns whose parents are not US citizens or legal permanent residents would not automatically acquire US citizenship. The order triggered lawsuits across the country, with multiple federal district judges issuing injunctions to block its implementation.

On April 1 this year, Trump personally appeared at the Supreme Court for oral arguments, becoming the first US president in history to defend himself in court while in office. In subsequent public remarks, Trump criticized the justices, referring to the judges he had appointed but who voted against him as “stupid people.” Critics argued that his appearance was an attempt to improperly influence the court’s ruling, which would have a significant impact on his domestic policies.

After the ruling was announced, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform: “This is too bad for our country, but we can easily make up for it in Congress.” He added that he would “fully support” the legislative branch.

Subsequently, Republican House Speaker Johnson commented on the judgment, calling it a “pedantic interpretation of the law” and noting that the system had been “seriously abused for a long time,” expressing deep disappointment with the outcome.
