Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said during a domestic inspection on the 20th that the government will resign first, and he will then call for early parliamentary elections. After continuing his presidential duties for up to two more weeks, he will step down and run for office, aiming to become Prime Minister, as reported by Serbia’s “Politika” on the 21st.

Vucic emphasized that he will only start his campaign after completing his presidential mission. He told reporters he will run as an ordinary citizen, without security personnel, driving across Serbia to win public support and secure the prime minister position.
Currently, the ruling coalition led by the Serbian Progressive Party holds a majority in the National Assembly. Vucic noted that, legally, he could become prime minister without holding elections, using the parliamentary majority directly, but he will not take that route. “I can only become prime minister if the people elect me,” he stressed.
Vucic previously served as Prime Minister from 2014 to 2017, then was elected President in April 2017 and re-elected in May 2022. Under Serbia’s constitution, the president serves a five-year term and can be re-elected once. In an earlier interview with Belgrade Radio, Vucic said he plans to resign as president, with presidential elections to take place within the next three to four months.
According to “The Hungarian Conservative” news commentary site, since the concrete canopy collapse at Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, the country has seen multiple protests. The British “Times” reported that protesters have been demanding early elections. Previously, Vucic described the protests as a carefully orchestrated “color revolution” aimed at destabilizing Serbia.
