On July 6, President Trump applauded Walmart for slashing prices on several items, calling the retailer a “truly patriotic company” and pushing other stores to do the same.
“Great news!” Trump wrote on social media. “I just found out that one of America’s biggest, best, and smartest retailers—Walmart—has agreed to significantly lower prices to celebrate our great nation’s 250th anniversary.”
He said this move “means a lot” to the millions of Americans who shop at Walmart and went on to call the company “a truly patriotic business.”
Trump also stressed that other retailers should follow the lead of “these real patriots.”
Bloomberg notes that Trump’s comments come as the White House tries to address voters’ worries about high costs for groceries, healthcare, housing, and utilities ahead of the November midterm elections.
Economic data shows consumer prices have been climbing steadily, and the situation in Iran has only added to the squeeze on Americans’ wallets.
Trump didn’t miss a chance to blame the Biden administration, calling the inflation crisis under former President Biden “the worst in history” and labeling it, along with the border crisis and the botched Afghanistan withdrawal, as “a complete disaster.”
Shortly after Trump’s post, Walmart released a statement saying it was lowering prices to help shoppers save money.
“Customers can find discounts on everything from groceries and home goods to outdoor gear, toys, and clothing,” the statement said, listing items like corn, beef, snacks, and soft drinks.
Walmart’s statement made no mention of Trump or the U.S. government, and the company declined to comment further.
